Right here is Heather, in her personal words…
Like so numerous persons, I was swept up in the awesome suggestions from Barbara’s book, Art Workshop for Kids. My students and I (as nicely as my complete family members) constructed our fair share of giant cardboard cakes this summer time. We took points in a distinctive path this week when we filled piping bags with homemade puffy paint and went to town on some giant cardboard gingerbread persons.
Supplies required to make Giant Cardboard Gingerbread:
~ Puffy paint (recipe under)
~ Piping bags or Ziploc baggies
1st points initial, go and collect all of these cardboard boxes that are crowding your recycling bin and draw out a uncomplicated gingerbread particular person. If cutting curves on thick cardboards send shivers down your spine, use an old cereal box. The thinner cardboard functions fantastic and is less difficult to reduce.
Subsequent, mix oneself up a batch of puffy paint. We retain it uncomplicated right here and just gently mix with each other two components shaving cream with 1 element white glue. This holds up just fine for our purposes and my personal little ones get pleasure from creating it themselves. I split this batch up and even added some liquid watercolor to add some wide variety in colour.
Prepare your piping bag by snipping off the tip initial. To fill the bag, hold the bag in the middle and fold the top rated half down more than your hand to open it up. With a popsicle stick or spatula, scoop the puff paint and push it into the bottom of the bag. Scrape any excess paint against the side. You will want to only fill the bag about two/three to three/four of the way up. Twist the top rated of the bag as soon as and gently “burp” the bag by adding a bit of stress to eradicate any air bubbles that may well have gotten trapped just before piping. I added a clothespin at the top rated to enable retain the bag closed.
NOTE: If you do not have any piping bags laying about, a uncomplicated plastic baggie would perform nicely as well, just reduce the tip off 1 of the corners.
I gave a small demo of the piping bag, stressing that you should really hold 1 hand on top rated, squeezing close to the clothespin and 1 at the bottom, guiding the bag exactly where to go. My youngest (three years old) remembered finest when we reminded him that 1 hand was the kid in the backseat and 1 hand was the daddy driving up front. I was shocked at how swift the littlest ones figured this out.
Following filling a divided container with paper scraps, pom-poms, ric-rac, sequins, beads, and what ever else we had laying about we armed students with popsicle sticks to enable frost and they went to town. They loved spreading thick and thin layers of puff paint, layering embellishments and discussing which many craft supplies represented the assortment of cake decorating supplies they had been familiar with. Black circles had been chocolate chips, vibrant paper scraps from the shredder had been sprinkles, and beads had been red hot candies.
Youngsters caught on to the piping bag relatively immediately and ages three-10 (as nicely as myself) had been deeply absorbed in making masterpieces nicely into the afternoon.
My little ones loved this encounter so a great deal that I took it a step additional and I shocked them with an oversized cardboard gingerbread residence right after naps.
HOT TIP: A small hot glue goes a lengthy way with an oversized cardboard gingerbread residence. They went to town piping, “frosting”, and decorating. My boys in particular loved piping icicles on the roof line and watching them drip additional and additional towards the table.
