Students will learn about post secondary arts programs offered by York University, career development, the business of being in the Arts Industry and much more. This is an amazing opportunity for students to learn a variety of dance genres from professional choreographers, explore the world of dance as a student of York University and to connect with other dancers in their community to share their creativity and talents. This conference is a high energy, fun-learning environment for all.

All students, teachers and guidance counsellors will get a guided tour of the School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design (AMPD) by current York students. Teachers and guidance counsellors will also get an information session with professors to ask more in-depth questions, they will also leave with information kits and a direct contact at York to get up to date information of new programs and learning opportunities for students.

Dance Revolt and SHSM

The SHSM–Arts and Culture enables students to build a foundation of sector-focused knowledge and skills before graduating and entering apprenticeship training, college, university, or an entry-level position in the workplace. Dance REVOLT provides students with opportunities to further explore dance as an area of focus and develop their skills, and to gain a better understanding of the various dance programs offered by York University.

Dance REVOLT also provides opportunities for students to explore occupations in the sector through experiential learning which include; visiting the York University dance department, participating in a full day of dance workshops, having one-on-one discussions with current York students, as well as participating in a highly dynamic and interactive 75 minute dialogue with our Master Choreographer. This conference is developed exclusively for students looking to acquire knowledge and resources from the Master Choreographer; who has experienced (ten or more years) in their profession. This conference aims to foster leadership through conversation around the latest topics and emerging issues affecting the arts industries.  These topics include: performance metrics, future trends, disruptive forces, and more.

Experiential learning and career exploration activities
Experiential learning and career exploration opportunities relevant to the sector might include the following:

  • one-on-one observation of a cooperative education student at a placement in the arts and culture sector (an example of job twinning)
  • a day-long observation of an artist (an example of job shadowing)
  • a one- or two-week work experience with a member of an industry association or a professional in the sector (an example of work experience)
  • participation in a local, provincial, or national competition focused on one of the arts
  • attendance at a sector trade show, conference, symposium, or job fair
a tour of a local theatre, museum, studio, or art gallery

Reach ahead experiences
Students are provided one or more reach ahead experiences – opportunities to take the next steps along their chosen pathway – as shown in the following examples:

  • Apprenticeship: visiting an approved apprenticeship delivery agent in the sector
  • College: interviewing a college student enrolled in a sector-specific program
  • University: observing a university class in a sector-related program
  • Workplace: interviewing an employee in the sector
