[fb_vid id=”1681076968637627″]Have you ever gone “against the grain” as a genre or musical instrument relative to your gender, culture or other ways people would stereotype you? Here’s Obini Bata, Cuba’s first all-female drum orchestra (and probably the first female bata band in the world), playing an instrument barred to women by religious law in Cuba.
According to the Afro-Cuban religion of Santeria, only men can play bata drums because it is a sacred instrument used during religious ceremonies to communicate with the Gods. “Religious people, at the beginning, told us that we were violating or lacking respect for religion, and although it is difficult to eradicate any kind of discrimination know that in the future there are more women who follow our steps.” said one of the members of the group.
