Dance Revolt: A Vital Revolution in Dance Pedagogy

Dance Revolt: A Vital Revolution in Dance Pedagogy

With a rich history of cultural exploration, Dance Revolt has been a beacon for diversity in the world of dance education. From Hip Hop to Traditional African Dance, it's not just about the moves; it's about celebrating the rich tapestry of dance and fostering cultural exchange, understanding, and appreciation.

For almost a decade, Dance Revolt has been a beacon of cultural celebration and learning in the world of dance education. This annual event, which has grown to become a cherished tradition, has left an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of students, educators, and the dance community at large.

On November 28th, 2014 92 high school students from North Albion Collegiate, Burnhamthrope, C.W. Jeffrey’s, Downsview Secondary School, Newtonbrook, Westview Centennial Secondary School met at Westview Secondary School to participate in a 1-day dance intensive workshop hosted1 by Just BGRAPHIC (JBG) and Westview Centennial.

At Just BGRAPHIC, we’re on a mission to decolonize the arts through respectful engagement with diverse dance traditions. Our workshops and performances go beyond teaching the steps; they provide participants with the historical and cultural context behind each dance, ensuring that every move is performed with respect, knowledge, and love.

1. A Rich History of Cultural Exploration

Dance Revolt has a history steeped in cultural exploration. Over the years, we’ve brought in a remarkable roster of instructors who represent a diverse tapestry of dance genres. From the legendary Luther Brown and the charismatic Bizzy to the soulful Mel Hart and the dynamic Raoul P, Dance Revolt has showcased the best in Hip Hop, Dancehall, Afrobeats, Soca, Traditional African Dance, Bollywood, Latin, House, Waccking, and more.

Our commitment to celebrating these diverse dance forms is at the heart of Dance Revolt’s mission. It’s not just about dance; it’s about cultural exchange, understanding, and appreciation. Each year, we expand our cultural repertoire, inviting new instructors to share their unique perspectives and dance forms, enriching the experience for all involved.

2. Decolonizing the Arts

Dance Revolt is more than just a dance conference; it’s a platform for decolonizing the arts. In a world where cultural appropriation can overshadow cultural appreciation, Dance Revolt stands as a bastion of respectful and informed engagement with diverse dance traditions. We believe in honoring the origins and significance of each dance form, ensuring that cultural appropriation has no place in our community.

Through workshops, discussions, and performances, Dance Revolt fosters an environment where participants not only learn the moves but also the history, significance, and cultural context behind them. It’s a powerful step towards decolonizing the arts, ensuring that every dance is performed with respect, knowledge, and love.

3. SHSM Certifications

Education is at the core of Dance Revolt, and that’s why we offer SHSM (Specialist High Skills Major) certifications. We understand the importance of providing students with the tools they need to succeed in their chosen field. With our SHSM certifications, students can gain valuable skills and knowledge that will serve them well in their future dance careers.

These certifications not only recognize the hard work and dedication of our participants but also open doors to new opportunities and pathways in the world of dance. Dance Revolt is not just a one-day event; it’s a stepping stone towards a brighter future in the arts.

We’ve come a long way!

As Dance Revolt approaches its milestone of a decade in existence, we reflect on the incredible journey we’ve embarked upon. We’re immensely proud of the diverse dance forms we’ve celebrated, the talented instructors we’ve hosted, and the cultural enrichment we’ve fostered.

Dance Revolt has become more than an event; it’s a movement. It’s a movement towards cultural appreciation, education, and decolonization of the arts. It’s a movement that empowers students to pursue their passion for dance and provides them with the tools they need to succeed.

As we look forward to the next decade of Dance Revolt, we invite you to join us in this extraordinary celebration of dance, culture, and education. Together, we’ll continue to make history in the world of dance.

Join us at Dance Revolt – where cultural celebration and learning come together, and where dance becomes a powerful tool for connection, understanding, and growth.
