Summary
Soca is a genre of Caribbean music and dance originating from Trinidad and Tobago and spread across the
Caribbean Islands. Soca is a high-energy fun dance that blends African and Caribbean
movements. The choreographies are based on traditional Afro Caribbean folklore movements
which are geared to body and waist isolations,waving, jumping and stomping to the rhythm of
soca music. These movements are usually performed in Caribbean social settings such as
Carnivals and Fetes. Students will learn about the West Indies culture while extending their dance
vocabulary.
This lesson focuses on the different African diasporic movements. Schools can choose which
style they would like their students to participate in.
