Traditional West African Dance is a free expressive dance loaded with history and culture. It is a
celebration and a visual representation of life. In West African traditions, there are dances that
represent every aspect of a human life; from birth to death. There are several from West Africa as
the region encompasses 16 countries, however the dances that will be taught in this section will
primarily come from Ghana and Guinea. These dances incorporate angular bending of arms, legs,
and torso, shoulder and hip movement; scuffing, stamping, and hopping steps.
This lesson focuses on the different African diasporic movements. Schools can choose which
style they would like their students to participate in.
